Crooked Willow Pottery is a dedicated artisan studio and retail shop nestled in the picturesque town of Bethel, New York, within the breathtaking Sullivan Catskills region. It is situated close to the historic Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, a renowned cultural landmark.
The studio is owned and operated by Sara Patterson, a skilled ceramic artist with a rich background, having previously directed EarthworksNYC in Manhattan’s Upper East Side. After a successful career in the city, she chose to retire to the serene countryside of the Catskills to realize her long-held dream of creating a country-based pottery studio.
Her artistic focus revolves around functional stoneware pieces, including handmade bowls, mugs, casseroles, and baking dishes. Her family’s dairy farm upbringing inspires these creations through its natural beauty, colors, textures, and rustic charm.
Crooked Willow Pottery is known for its use of atmospheric cone 6 salt-reduction firing techniques, which are carried out in a specially designated kiln named “Olive.” During this firing process, salt is introduced into the kiln to chemically react with the clay, resulting in distinctive, textured surfaces that make each piece unique.
The studio blends traditional craftsmanship with innovative firing methods, producing functional art that reflects the region’s natural environment and artisanal spirit.
