The Horse & Hound Inn is a historic American restaurant and tavern situated in South Salem, New York. Originally built as a private homestead before the American Revolutionary War, the property has a rich history.
The earliest known record of it functioning as an inn dates back to 1749. Over the years, the landmark has served various roles, including a mason schoolhouse, a gin and rum mill, and a busy stagecoach stop on the Old Post Road, which connected New York City and Danbury, Connecticut. An adjacent building once operated as a blacksmith shop to service travelers’ horses.
Today, the owners maintain the building’s 18th-century charm with features like exposed dark ceiling beams, wide-plank wood floors, and a cozy stone fireplace.
The inn is a casual, inviting neighborhood spot divided into two dining areas with separate entrances. The Restaurant Area provides a more formal setting with upscale American dishes such as duck à l’orange, prime rib, and Atlantic salmon. The Pub Section offers a relaxed bar atmosphere, with high-top tables and classic tavern fare such as burgers, sandwiches, and salads. Customers consistently praise
The Horse & Hound Inn is known for its warm hospitality and attentive service. As a family-owned local favorite, the experience remains personal and community-oriented, rather than purely commercial.
