Crooked Willow Pottery – Utilitarian Stoneware For Everyday Use From Bethel

Crooked Willow Pottery was founded after Sara Patterson guided EarthworksNYC on projects in Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Following her passion, she relocated to the Sullivan Catskills to realize her dream of operating a country studio dedicated to pottery. Her artistic focus is on creating functional, utilitarian stoneware pieces that are suitable for everyday use. These include hand-thrown bowls, mugs, plates, and baking dishes, all thoughtfully designed to withstand regular use. Her aesthetic inspiration is deeply rooted in the rustic textures and organic color palettes reminiscent of her family’s dairy-farm heritage, which influences her artistic choices.

Her pottery pieces are fired in a reduction atmosphere within her signature cone-6 salt kiln named Olive. Salt-firing involves introducing salt into the kiln during the firing process, which reacts with the clay to create a durable, distinctive, and beautifully textured glaze. This technique produces unique surface qualities that reflect the natural beauty of the materials used. Local potters have the opportunity to rent shelf space or the entire kiln for reduction firings, provided they use compatible cone-6 clay, supporting a creative community of ceramic artists in the region.

For visitors seeking an engaging, hands-on experience, the studio offers a comprehensive “Clay for a Day” workshop that lasts for two hours. During this session, participants receive personalized guidance on various clay techniques, including clay wedging, wheel throwing, and kiln operation basics. All necessary materials are supplied, ensuring a seamless experience. Participants have the opportunity to create their own salt-fired ceramic piece, which can be conveniently picked up locally after it has dried and been fired, or alternatively, it can be shipped directly to their home address.
