Happy Life Animal Rescue (HLAR) is a nonprofit, foster-based animal rescue organization in Pawling, New York. Founded in 2016, it serves the entire Hudson Valley and surrounding areas, focusing on rescuing and rehoming homeless dogs and cats.
HLAR is committed to saving animals that are victims of abuse, neglect, shelter overpopulation, and owner surrender. The organization’s mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome cats and dogs into loving forever homes. It also aims to educate the public about the importance of spaying and neutering to reduce animal homelessness and collaborates with other rescue organizations to save more animals.
At the heart of HLAR’s approach is its network of foster families, which allows animals to live and socialize in a home environment while waiting for adoption. This is especially helpful for neglected or shy animals.
The rescue pulls animals from high-kill shelters and other challenging situations. For those with health issues, such as animals rescued from puppy mills, HLAR provides comprehensive veterinary care.

With the support of their dedicated team of foster caregivers, HLAR gives animals not yet ready for adoption a chance to live and be loved in family homes. This partnership with Hudson Valley-based families enables HLAR to take in more cats and dogs. Fostering is an incredibly rewarding experience that you’ll never forget and that directly improves the lives of rescue animals.
Why foster?
- Each animal fostered out to a home opens up a cage or kennel space for us to save another animal.
- Fostering can provide the unique, individualized attention that some special-needs animals require before they’re ready for adoption
- Fostering has a direct, positive impact on the animal and is a hugely rewarding experience for those who choose to become caregivers.
