Sally Rothchild Ceramics are carefully handcrafted on the potter’s wheel within a dedicated studio nestled in the scenic Catskill Mountains. Each piece of pottery is thoughtfully designed to be both functional and enjoyable for everyday use.
In her artistic practice, Sally aims to blend aesthetic appeal with practicality, ensuring that every item is not only visually striking but also a pleasure to handle and use regularly. Her collection includes a diverse range of functional and decorative wares, such as elegant platters, serving bowls, versatile pitchers, cozy mugs, hearty casseroles, decorative vases, storage jars, classic teapots, and more, catering to various needs and tastes.
All Sally Rothchild Ceramics are handcrafted as hand-thrown stoneware pieces on the potter’s wheel, which naturally introduces subtle differences and variations in shape and form. These unique nuances give each pot its own distinctive character and charm. She decorates her pottery with various techniques, including white slip accents, sgraffito (an ancient technique involving incised drawings), delicate brushwork, and a range of glazes applied through pouring, dripping, and brushing. After shaping and decorating, the pottery is fired to a high temperature in a gas-fired reduction kiln.
Map/Directions/Reviews
The firing process, influenced by the variable flame and precise temperature control, produces rich color depth, interesting surface textures, and vibrant variations that give each piece a sense of depth and dimension. The high-quality glazes—including oxblood copper-red, Japanese shino, and volcanic ash—are specially formulated to respond uniquely during firing, creating stunning effects and variations. The final collection balances the artistry of form, practicality of function, and the timeless beauty of handcrafted craftsmanship.
