Some of the Hudson Valley’s best-kept secrets are hiding in plain sight. In the quiet village of Pine Plains, a small bread shed serves homemade sourdough to those lucky enough to know where to look.
No fancy storefront, no bustling bakery counter — just freshly baked bread from Susie Q’s Homemade Sourdough Co. and the pleasure of discovering something special.

Known as The Bread Shed, this weekend stop offers a taste of old-fashioned, homemade goodness, with artisan sourdough loaves, bagels, and an assortment of baked treats.
Behind the bread is Susie, a registered nurse turned stay-at-home mom whose sourdough journey began with a simple desire to bake her family bread from wholesome ingredients. What started in her kitchen has grown into a local business that shares that same homemade goodness with the community.
She makes her sourdough with organic flour, naturally fermented yeast, filtered water, and simple ingredients. The bagels receive the same careful attention, with varieties and toppings that include everything seasoning, sesame, cheddar cheese, poppy seeds, and onion.
No elaborate displays or bustling bakery counters here. Just a small bread shed, a dedicated local baker, and the pleasure of discovering something delicious in an unexpected place.
For those who appreciate handmade food and the small businesses that give the Hudson Valley its character, Susie Q’s is worth seeking out.
A little shed. A lot of sourdough. And one more reason to explore Pine Plains.
The Bread Shed is open most Saturdays and Sundays and stocked with a variety of sourdough baked goods. Please follow on social media for weekly offerings, updates, and news!
