Rockland County Back in the Day was known worldwide as the “Brickmaking Capital of the World” and was a key center for industry, agriculture, and transportation, located just north of New York City. As the smallest county in New York outside the five boroughs, it was characterized by large clay deposits from the Hudson River and a highly seasonal workforce.
