Rustic Wheelhouse Restaurant History
The building has a rich local history that predates its use as a restaurant. It remains a key part of the historic downtown Chester scene.
Originally called the George H. Brooks Carriage and Sleigh Factory, the building’s industrial roots still shape its current identity—the “Wheelhouse.” This name honors the wheels made on-site for carriages, highlighting its historic craftsmanship. Outside, a sign saying “Brooks’ Garage” remains as a nod to its past uses.
Over time, it became Bodle’s Opera House, a lively cultural center hosting performances, social gatherings, and community events until shifting to commercial use. Around 1935, the building was extensively renovated to accommodate new functions while keeping its historic character. Before opening the Rustic Wheelhouse in 2014, it housed several businesses, including Orange County Wheels and Maggie’s in the Alley, contributing to its legacy as a local business hub.
Today, the restaurant preserves its historic charm with a rustic interior featuring original exposed wooden beams and stone accents, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere. The exterior displays a star, and an old external staircase adds character. Its architectural details have been featured in exhibits by the Chester Historical Society, highlighting the town’s development and the building’s significant role in local history.
