Out of the Pits is a dedicated non-profit organization established in 1994 with the primary goal of educating the public about the true nature of the American breed. The organization seeks to dispel misconceptions and raise awareness about this breed’s characteristics and history.

Additionally, it aims to remind people that the American breed was once one of the most beloved and admired breeds in the country. Its overarching mission is to restore the breed to its former esteemed status and to ensure that it is appreciated and respected in the hearts and minds of people everywhere. Through various educational programs, community outreach, and advocacy efforts, the organization works tirelessly to change perceptions and promote a positive understanding of the American breed.

The organization generally has a wide variety of dogs available for adoption. The adoption page is updated regularly, so check back often if you don’t see a dog that fits your needs.

Programs

Media Coverage
Promoting positive media coverage is probably the highest priority. Out of the Pits supports stories that show Pit Bulls in a positive light to counteract the attack stories (mostly involving cruelly abused dogs) that have spread unwarranted fear of this misunderstood breed.

Elementary & Secondary School Workshops
Out of the Pits has created a series of successful in-school programs that raise awareness about pet care and humane treatment of animals, using Pit Bulls as examples.

Public Education Clinics
These clinics are held in pet stores, shopping centers, fairs, dog walks-anywhere people gather. Visitors can see titled obedience and agility Pit Bulls perform, read literature about the history and true nature of the American Pit Bull Terrier, and learn about the adoption process from families who have adopted dogs from Out of the Pits or local shelters. Those interested in adopting can view photos and descriptions of Pit Bulls waiting for homes.

Therapy Dog Programs
Currently, Out of the Pits has 14 Certified Therapy Dogs, with more in training. These dogs have been visiting nursing homes, hospitals, and rehab centers for years. Their presence is always welcomed, and patients are especially pleased with the dogs’ naturally affectionate personalities.

Spay-Neuter Program
Unfortunately, Out of the Pits receives about 1,000 requests weekly to take in unwanted Pit Bulls. Shelter statistics are equally alarming—more than 80% of Pit Bulls in shelters are euthanized, and typically only 1 in 600 Pit Bulls find a caring home. While Out of the Pits has been helping owners spay and neuter their Pit Bulls informally for years, a few years ago, they launched an official “Fix-A-Bull” spay-neuter initiative.
