Margaret Arnold, better known by her childhood name Peggy Shippen, has been portrayed as either a total innocent or the scheming mastermind behind Benedict Arnold’s treason. Letters, deeds, wills, and other documents from the time correct the fiction, and reveal the nuances of an 18th-century woman navigating family, marriage, and two countries at war. Hear the truth from the woman some credit with convincing Benedict Arnold to turn coat.
