This is part of Trailside Museums and Zoo’s monthly hiking series. We will take the Major Welch Trail (blaze white with red circle) up the north side of Bear Mountain to the summit and Perkins Tower. This will be a challenging hike, so sturdy boots are a must, and a hiking stick or trekking poles are recommended. The loop is about 4 miles, and we will allocate 3.5 hours for the trek. We’ll gain 1,040 ft during the ascent. The trail includes dirt paths, stone steps, and short rock scrambles. Once at the top, we will have some time to pause, take in the scenery, and enjoy any snacks you bring. We will descend via the Appalachian Trail back down Bear Mountain. Be sure to bring enough water for the entire hike, as there are no water sources once we start up the trail. There should be porta-potties at the top, but no running water. Parking at Bear Mountain costs $10 per car.
