Bramley Mountain Farm in Bovina Center is well-known for raising Belted Galloway beef cattle. These cattle are cared for from birth to harvest in the farm’s pastures, resulting in high-quality and delicious meat. The farm offers whole and half sides of beef for purchase, as well as individual cuts directly from the farm.
The Belted Galloway breed, commonly known as Belties, has a long history that dates back to the 16th century in the former Galloway district of Scotland. The breed was first brought to North America in 1939. One of the distinct features of Belted Galloways is their double coat of hair, which provides insulation during the harsh winter months in Delaware County. This characteristic sets them apart from other breeds, which rely on a layer of back fat for insulation.
Belted Galloways yield exceptionally lean, flavorful, and high-quality meat. What distinguishes them is the farm’s commitment to natural practices. The cattle are not given hormones, antibiotics, or any animal by-products in their diet. Instead, they graze on grass during the pasture season and are provided with homegrown dry and fermented hay in the winter. Furthermore, steers or heifers intended for harvest are finished with whole corn or, upon request, with grass alone, ensuring a varied and wholesome diet for the animals.
